I hadn’t flown in about three weeks with a few flights cancelled due to weather and was itching to go.

That got me to thinking. I went out flying early this morning before work. I didn’t tell anyone at work that I was going flying, just that I would be in a little late this morning. I had to give a presentation to our Board of Directors this evening and had a lot on my mind. But I decided last night that I would go flying. Once I get in the air, my mind is free of all the hassles of the world – my shrinking retirement fund, paying bills, the hassles of work, whatever. I am totally focused on flying the airplane (and loving every minute as Maxwell Smart might say). This morning, all I did was fly out to DMW, shoot an approach VFR by myself, and turn around and go home. I put a whopping 0.7 hours on the tach. But after I put the plane back in the hangar and got in my car to finally drive to work, I was feeling great – a natural high I guess. Maybe it’s just me but I’m willing to bet a lot of our club members get that same feeling after a flight.

I realize that many members may not have the luxury to do what I did. But if you do, I highly recommend it. My day went much better, my presentation went great, and my wallet is only a little lighter having only spent 0.7 hours. Being a member of a club with access to 5 great airplanes REALLY is a fantastic thing. I had my choice of all 5 airplanes this morning but took the one I did.

So, I recommend that if you have the capability to play hooky from work for a few hours first thing in the morning or in the late afternoon or evening, go flying. I’ll bet you’ll feel a whole lot better when you’re done. I know I do.
